Kolkata Municipal Corporation mulls hiring third-party agency to digitise old birth and death certificates

Kolkata, Nov 4 (UNI) The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is considering hiring a third-party technology agency to digitise old birth and death certificates.
According to sources, a large number of applications for birth and death certificates are pending at the civic body's headquarters. The number of pending applications is estimated to be around 30,000. Although certificates are being issued online, a substantial number of applications are yet to be cleared.
On Monday, KMC Administrator Smita Pandey inspected the queues of applicants at the civic body's headquarters. She took note of the difficulties faced by citizens waiting in long queues and subsequently decided to increase the number of counters to address the problem.
According to the Municipal Commissioner, an inquiry was conducted, which revealed an increase in the backlog of birth certificate applications.
"As the nature of KMC as a civic body is different, the municipal corporation authorities need to think differently. We will have to return to the old structure for issuing birth and death certificates; otherwise, the pendency will increase," Pandey said.
Meanwhile, issuing digital birth certificates for registrations dating back several decades has emerged as a challenge for the civic body. In view of this, KMC is exploring options to digitise old birth and death records.
"These old certificates dating back to the 1950s and 1960s are kept as hard copies and are huge in number. We have to rope in agencies that would help us digitise the old certificates," the Municipal Commissioner said.
The civic body is considering engaging technology companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for the purpose. UNI NN NST
