Eight Nagpur jewellers get Rs 10 lakh extortion threats in Bishnoi gang’s name

Nagpur, Nov 2 (UNI) At least eight bullion traders in Nagpur’s Sarafa Bazar have received threatening letters demanding Rs 10 lakh each in the name of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, with police suspecting that local criminals may be using the gang’s identity to extort money, officials confirmed on Monday.
The letters, sent through post over the past four to five days, threatened to kill the traders and their family members if they failed to pay the demanded amount or approached the police.
According to police , the letters gave traders three to five days to arrange the money. They were also asked to write ‘Jai Shri Ram’ outside their shops if they were willing to pay, following which further instructions regarding the transfer of money would be communicated.
The threatening letters reportedly referred to the recent firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff and warned the jewellers of a similar attack.
Police suspect that local criminals might be misusing the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to intimidate jewellers and extort money. However, the identity of those behind the threats and their alleged links with the gang are yet to be established.
Meanwhile, Rajesh Rokde, president of the jewellers' association, brought the matter to the attention of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil, seeking immediate security measures for traders.
The incident has triggered concern among jewellery traders, particularly ahead of the festive season, when business activity and high-value transactions increase significantly.
Police are investigating the matter from various angles.
