Enhanced safety & security measures implemented in Astha Kunj Park Kalkaji, a month after minor's gangrape

New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) Following reports highlighting inadequate lighting and security arrangements at Aastha Kunj Park, Kalkaji, the Delhi government has undertaken several measures, that include deployment of all security guards as per the presently allotted strength, and various other steps to ensure enhanced safety and security at the park, following the gangrape of a minor there a month ago.
According to senior Delhi government officials, considering its extensive area of 142.41 acres and 29 gates, regular patrolling is undertaken to ensure security coverage across the park.
For night patrolling, two siren-equipped motorcycles, along with torches and essential safety equipment, are deployed, and surprise night inspections are also conducted by the Site In-charge, Security Supervisor and departmental staff to verify security arrangements and guard deployment.
All 340 existing lights in the park are presently functional, and further, 105 additional lights have been installed in accordance with the recommendations of the Safety Audit Report.
A joint inspection has been conducted with the Electrical officials concerned, and the proposal for installation of high-mast lights at suitable identified locations is under process.
Approximately 99 per cent of the park area falls within the Morphological Ridge, and therefore, additional illumination in densely vegetated areas is being planned judiciously to avoid disturbance to the natural flora and fauna while ensuring adequate lighting along pathways and visitor-use areas.
Four CCTV cameras were installed following the recent incident, and all are presently functional.
The damaged portions of the boundary wall have been repaired. No breach or broken portion of the boundary wall has been reported at present.
All gates have been made lockable as recommended in the Safety Audit Report, and the wicket gates are closed at 9:00 pm, in accordance with the existing arrangements.
The condition of lights, CCTV cameras, gates and boundary walls, along with the deployment and performance of security personnel, is being monitored regularly, while necessary corrective action is taken wherever deficiencies are observed.
All the security guards are marking their attendance biometrically at multiple times along with physical roll call, and the same is being monitored through the dashboard.
A girl had been allegedly sexually assaulted in September at the Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir in South Delhi, and afterwards a proper audit of the place was conducted to rule out all the security gaps.
A 17-year-old minor was gangraped inside the park on the evening of September 21, 2026. The incident sparked widespread public outrage, and a major administrative crackdown on the security infrastructure of public parks across New Delhi.
