INDIA Bloc Announces ‘Public Impeachment’ of Gyanesh Kumar on October 30, Mega ‘Dilli Chalo’ March on Nov 1

New Delhi, Oct 24 (UNI) Intensifying its campaign against the 'irregularities of the Election Commission', the INDIA bloc will hold a “public impeachment” proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 30, followed by a massive “Dilli Chalo” march to Ramlila Maidan on November 1, Congress general secretary K C Venugopal announced on Saturday, as the Opposition steps up its nationwide campaign against what it calls “vote chori”.
Announcing the two programmes, Venugopal said the INDIA bloc’s mobilisation was part of a broader struggle to defend the Constitution and hold the Election Commission accountable over allegations of manipulation of the electoral process. He described the October 30 event as a crucial public proceeding intended to convey the people’s demand for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner.
“In our effort to save the Constitution and defeat the Vote Chors, INDIA bloc will be holding a crucial Public Impeachment proceeding on 30th October,” he said in a post on the social media platform X. He added that the public’s verdict demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s removal would be “delivered loud and clear”.
The Congress general secretary said the proceeding would be followed by a “Dilli Chalo” mobilisation on November 1, culminating at the historic Ramlila Maidan in the national capital. Claiming that at least one million citizens concerned about the integrity of elections would join the march, he sought to project the proposed gathering as a major demonstration of public opposition to alleged electoral malpractice.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has reached out to leaders of INDIA bloc constituents, urging them to ensure the presence of their leaders and members in Delhi for the planned programmes. Venugopal said Kharge had called on alliance partners to participate in full strength, signalling the Congress leadership’s determination to bring the Opposition together around the issue of electoral accountability.
The planned mobilisation comes amid an intensifying confrontation between the Opposition and the Election Commission of India over electoral rolls, voter deletions and the fairness of the electoral process. Congress leaders have repeatedly questioned the Commission’s handling of these concerns and demanded accountability from its leadership, particularly Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Congress and other INDIA bloc parties have increasingly used the expression “vote chori” to describe 'irregularities' undermining the democratic process. They have argued that discrepancies in electoral rolls and concerns over the inclusion or deletion of voters warrant transparent investigation and effective remedial action. The BJP and the Opposition remain sharply divided over these allegations, which have emerged as a major political flashpoint.
The proposed “public impeachment”, however, is a political expression and not a formal constitutional impeachment proceeding. The removal of a Chief Election Commissioner is governed by constitutional provisions and prescribed safeguards. The INDIA bloc’s planned event is therefore intended to build political and public pressure.
With the October 30 proceeding and the November 1 march approaching, the Opposition is seeking to turn 'vote chori' into a wider public campaign, while demonstrating unity among its constituent parties. The proposed participation of a million people, if achieved, would give the mobilisation considerable political visibility. Its eventual impact will depend on the scale of public participation, the cohesion displayed by the INDIA bloc and the response of the Election Commission and the government to the Opposition’s demands.
