Establish lift irrigation projects on Godavari in Mulugu: Seethakka

Hyderabad, May 17 (UNI) Telangana Panchayat Raj, Rural Development, Women and Child Welfare Minister Dr Danasari Anasuya Seethakka met Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy at his residence in Banjara Hills on Saturday and submitted a petition proposing the construction of lift irrigation projects on the Godavari river in the Mulugu constituency.
Highlighting the plight of farmers in the region, Seethakka explained that despite the Godavari flowing for nearly 100 KM through Mulugu, the local farmers have long been deprived of irrigation facilities, resulting in a deep-rooted injustice that has spanned generations.
Seethakka emphasised that although the constituency is home to significant water bodies like the Ramappa, Laknavaram, and Pakala tanks, the absence of infrastructure to utilize the Godavari waters has hindered both agricultural development and rural prosperity.
She urged the Irrigation Department to approve new lift irrigation schemes to ensure proper usage of this natural resource and requested additional funds for the construction of the Ramappa-Laknavaram canal.
Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy responded positively to her appeal and acknowledged the need for immediate action. He assured Seethakka that a detailed feasibility study would be undertaken for the proposed projects, and necessary steps would be initiated to construct lift irrigation systems on the Godavari river.
Minister Seethakka expressed her gratitude for the positive assurance and reiterated the urgency of implementing these projects to support the agrarian communities of Mulugu.
Among the proposed initiatives, transferring water from the Ramappa tank to the Laknavaram tank is expected to benefit farmers significantly while also boosting local tourism. Another proposal involves lifting Godavari water to the Incho tank via the Devadula pipeline. Through the Potlapuram lift irrigation project, approximately 5,000 acres across five villages could be irrigated using water from the Ramappa tank.
Additional plans include diverting water to the Jakaram tank through the DBM canal and channeling the Gouraram stream into the Mallur project to support local agriculture. A key component also includes the development of a lift irrigation scheme from the Pakala tank, aimed at providing irrigation water to tribal farmers, thereby contributing to the agricultural development of tribal mandals.
If executed, these projects promise a transformative impact on the irrigation landscape of Mulugu, ending decades of neglect and empowering the region’s farmers with sustainable access to water resources, an official statement said.
