Factional squabble in Tripura BJP led to violence in Dharmanagar

Agartala, Sep 24 (UNI) Political differences within the ruling BJP in North Tripura have sparked a series of incidents involving party workers, local supporters, and a student protest against Barnali Goswami, wife of Dharmanagar MLA Jahar Chakraborty.
Allegations of internal rivalry and confrontation within the ruling party have come to the forefront following separate incidents reported in the constituency over the past two days. The controversy began with a protest at Dharmanagar Government Degree College, where members of ABVP raised “Go Back” slogans against Goswami.
Allegedly, her presence during the students’ protest over issues including teacher shortages, drinking-water facilities, and alleged interruptions to regular academic activities turned the situation volatile. Then at night, her followers assaulted the father of a student leader who raised slogans against Barnali.
Local allegations suggest that a person close to the Dharmanagar MLA was assaulted by BJP workers, with a Mandal-level leader also implicated. It has also been alleged that the MLA intervened to rescue his associate during the confrontation.
Counter-allegations have also arisen, claiming that supporters linked to another faction were attacked inside the BJP district office. The student protest has become part of the wider controversy, with allegations emerging that the father of an ABVP student leader involved in the protest was assaulted while traveling on the road.
These incidents have fuelled discussions about factional differences within the BJP's Dharmanagar organization, prompting demands for a police investigation and action against those found responsible for any violence.
