FDA Seizes 1,394 Kg Chemically Ripened Bananas, Destroys 16,730 Litres Adulterated Milk

Mumbai, Oct 6 (UNI) The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized 1,394 kg of chemically ripened bananas at Turbhe APMC and destroyed 16,730 litres of detergent-adulterated milk during enforcement drives across the state, officials said on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, FDA officials raided a fruit stall at APMC Fruit Market, Sector-19, Turbhe, on October 5 and found bananas being dipped in a solution of BTHILEX (Ethephon 39% SL). The seller admitted mixing two caps of the chemical in five litres of water.
The FDA seized 1,394 kg of bananas, including 198 kg Sundari, 498 kg Elaichi and 698 kg Khatta Meetha varieties, valued at Rs 67,814. Samples of the bananas and chemical solution were collected.
Officials said the chemical container carried suspicious manufacturer details and did not mention a CIB&RC registration number, raising suspicion that it was counterfeit. A case was registered at APMC Police Station under relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, BNS 2023 and Insecticides Act, 1968.
The FDA said only ethylene gas up to 100 ppm in closed chambers is permitted for fruit ripening under FSSAI guidelines, while directly dipping fruits in ethephon solution is prohibited.
Meanwhile, FDA's Pune Division registered two cases at Malshiras after milk samples collected from two dairies at Piliv tested positive for detergent and were declared unsafe.
At Mahalaxmi Milk and Milk Products, 7,634 litres of milk valued at Rs 3,05,360 were destroyed, while 9,096 litres worth Rs 3,63,840 were destroyed at Delivish Agro Dairy Product Pvt Ltd.
The total quantity of milk destroyed was 16,730 litres, valued at Rs 6.69 lakh. Cases were registered under the Food Safety and Standards Act and relevant provisions of the BNS.
In a separate drive against prohibited food products, the FDA's Mumbai Division inspected three establishments between September 30 and October 5, seized banned gutkha and tobacco products worth Rs 31.14 lakh, registered three FIRs and arrested three persons.
The Konkan Division seized two vehicles in Palghar carrying banned tobacco products. At Charoti Toll Naka in Dahanu, products worth Rs 43.5 lakh and a vehicle valued at Rs 20 lakh were seized, while at Khadinavde Toll Naka in Vasai, gutkha worth Rs 19.8 lakh and a vehicle valued at Rs 15 lakh were seized.
The total value of prohibited food products seized in the drive stood at Rs 94.45 lakh, while vehicles worth Rs 35 lakh were also seized. Five persons were arrested and three FIRs registered.
The FDA's Mumbai Division also took action against 11 hotels and eateries for food safety, hygiene and documentation violations. Licences of eight establishments and registration certificates of three others were suspended.
Officials found violations including improper food storage temperatures, flies and insects, open waste bins, uncovered food, reuse of blackened cooking oil, use of non-food-grade plastic, damaged flooring, inadequate pest control and absence of medical certificates for workers.
