Borivali: Two women arrested for alleged extortion after claiming rodent found in dosa

Mumbai, Oct 7 (UNI) Two women have been arrested by Borivali police for alleged extortion after they claimed that a rodent was found in a dosa at a prominent eatery, and later demanded money from the hotelier.
The controversy unfolded on September 24 at the Radha Krishna eatery located on LT Road in Borivali West, when a visiting group claimed to have found a rat in a dosa.
A video clip of the incident went viral on September 26, prompting FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe’s administration to swiftly suspend the establishment's operating license on September 28.
The case has now drawn strong intervention from the local political leadership and the business community, which has stepped forward to shield local restaurateurs from malicious shakedowns.
According to police and the FIR registered by eatery owner Pankaj Gangar (Shah), the accused women—identified as Mansi Amit Acharya and Kinjal Subhash Bhatia—allegedly hounded the management, initially demanding a staggering Rs 1.5 crore before negotiating down the figure, in exchange for not escalating the viral smears and police complaints.
Cornered by continuous threats of legal harassment and digital exposure, the owner settled for Rs 7 lakh in installments, including a Rs 1 lakh token cash payment.
Gangar then approached the Borivali police on September 29.
Acting on the complaint, law enforcement laid a trap.
On the evening of October 5, investigators caught Mansi red-handed while she was accepting a cash installment of Rs 6 lakh in the presence of independent witnesses.
Both suspects have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for extortion.
Local MLA Sanjay Upadhyay while defending the strict food safety protocols has warned against opportunistic criminal elements.
"FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe is working for the benefit of the people, and that is right," MLA Upadhyay stated.
"But at such a time, many people with different motives take advantage by threatening restaurateurs and demanding money. This should not happen, so I decided to come forward."
The local business community has rallied behind the eatery, urging authorities to crack down heavily on bad-faith actors weaponizing consumer grievances for financial extortion.
Police investigations into the wider network of the accused are currently underway.
