Fresh allegations surface in Valmiki funds scheme

Bengaluru, June 27 (UNI) In a fresh and explosive allegation, BJP ST Morcha president Bangaru Hanumanthu today accused the ruling Congress of misusing crores of rupees allocated for Valmiki community welfare to fund political activities during elections.
Addressing media, Hanumanthu said, “This is not just corruption; it is betrayal of our most backward and poorest community. Funds meant for self-employment schemes were fraudulently drawn from banks in the names of Valmiki community beneficiaries across multiple districts, without their knowledge, and were instead used for political purposes, including elections.”
He claimed that in the run-up to recent by-elections and local body polls, crores were withdrawn from banks such as Bank of Maharashtra in Kolar district under the guise of disbursing loans to poor Valmiki farmers from taluks like Shira and Pavagada.
“Each beneficiary’s name was used to draw around Rs 2 lakh. But these poor people, who had never received a single rupee, were shocked to find they were marked as loan recipients when they applied again in 2024,” he alleged.
Hanumanthu demanded a high-level probe, warning that the misuse of Valmiki Development Corporation funds could run into hundreds of crores. “This is not limited to one district. The same pattern has repeated across Karnataka. The scam appears to be systematic,” he said.
He pointed out that a similar scam had taken place during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when Padmanabha was the Managing Director of the Corporation. “Now again, under the current MD Sridhar, the misuse has continued,” he said, blaming the absence of a dedicated minister for the corporation.
“The Valmiki Development Corporation is now under the Chief Minister himself. Since the Congress came to power, there has been no minister to oversee it, and this has led to unchecked corruption. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has not shown any genuine intent to develop the Valmiki community. Instead, he is allowing these funds to be politically exploited,” Hanumanthu charged.
