Gandak discharge rising, administration on high alert: Choudhary

Patna, Sept 27 (UNI) Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary has said the administration was on high alert following a rise in water discharge at the Valmikinagar barrage due to heavy rainfall in the Gandak river's catchment area in Nepal.
Choudhary told news persons here on Sunday that 4.24 lakh cusecs of water was recorded at the barrage at 11 am and the discharge was showing an increasing trend. Based on the water level at Nepal's Devghat gauge station, around 80 km upstream of the barrage, the discharge at Valmikinagar could reach around five lakh cusecs or more by evening, he said. Although the expected discharge was likely to remain below the maximum 5.625 lakh cusecs recorded in 2024, the department was closely monitoring the situation, Choudhary said.
Additional engineers had been deployed to monitor both embankments of the Gandak, while all field engineers had been directed to remain on round-the-clock alert. Any negligence in embankment surveillance would invite strict action, he said.
Choudhary said the comparatively low water level in the Ganga was currently facilitating smooth drainage of Gandak water into the river. Therefore, there was no immediate indication of widespread waterlogging or a serious flood situation. He, however, cautioned that natural conditions could not be predicted with complete certainty and urged people to remain alert without panicking.
Meanwhile, the Gopalganj district administration intensified preparedness measures in view of a possible rise in the Gandak's water level.
District Magistrate Sameer Saurabh inspected vulnerable and potentially flood-prone areas in Sidhwalia, Baikunthpur, Manjha and Barauli blocks, including Dumariya Ghat, Deepau Chharki, Maharani Chharki, Sattarghat and Bakhri embankments.
He also reviewed preparations in potentially affected villages, including Pakaha, Sheetalpur, Faizullahpur and Pyarepur, and directed officials to maintain continuous surveillance of vulnerable areas. Officials were instructed to keep disaster management resources and equipment ready and make advance arrangements for shifting people from low-lying areas to safer locations if required.
Sub-Divisional Officer Prerna Singh also inspected vulnerable areas in Kuchaykot and Gopalganj blocks, including Kala Matihania, Katgharwa, Jagiri Tola and Khap Maqsudpur.
The administration directed officials to use public-address systems to alert residents in vulnerable areas and advised people to avoid unnecessary movement near the river and waterlogged areas.
Authorities have appealed to residents to follow official advisories and immediately inform the local administration in case of an emergency.
