Govt backs GalaxEye with Rs 64 crore for all-weather Earth imaging satellite

New Delhi, Sep 24 (UNI) A Bengaluru-based space startup, GalaxEye Space Solutions, will receive approximately Rs 64 crore in government funds to build a multi-sensor satellite to capture interrupted images of Earth from space, said officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology on Thursday.
The company has entered into an agreement with the government's Technology Development Board (TDB), securing funds under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund.
Officials said the grant is intended to help GalaxEye to undertake further development, engineering, testing and validation of the proposed technology, helping move the project through the critical stages from advanced development to deployment stages.
Recognising the need to support India's space ecosystem, which is becoming increasingly important, Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary, TDB, said,"The agreement with GalaxEye reflects TDB's focus on enabling indigenous capabilities in emerging space technologies and supporting their journey towards commercialisation."
The proposed satellite is designed to provide sub-0.5 metre high-resolution imaging.
The technology is intended to support applications including wide-area and long-range surveillance, human and vehicle detection, and target classification, while enabling imaging across diverse weather and lighting conditions.
At the heart of the GalaxEye project, with a total approved cost of Rs 247.69 crore, is OptoSAR, an approach that brings together two fundamentally different ways of observing the Earth — Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Electro-Optical (EO) imaging.
While optical imaging can provide highly detailed visual information, its effectiveness can be affected by cloud cover and illumination. SAR, on the other hand, can operate irrespective of daylight and can image through cloud cover.
The proposed system seeks to bring these complementary capabilities together through fusion of SAR and EO data, enabling a richer and more continuous picture of the Earth.
