National security extends beyond borders, India adopts holistic approach to counter emerging threats: Rajnath

New Delhi, 24 Sep (UNI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said India’s national security doctrine can no longer be confined to protecting geographical borders, as emerging threats increasingly span drones, cyber warfare, lone-wolf attacks, disinformation, economic vulnerabilities and disruption of energy supply chains.
Addressing a defence conclave here, Singh said the government had adopted a “holistic approach” to strengthen defence preparedness against an increasingly fluid security environment. “To view national security solely in terms of safeguarding geographical boundaries amounts to ‘Perimeter Fallacy’,” he said, stressing that modern warfare and security challenges had expanded well beyond conventional battlefields.
Singh said India's security architecture must take into account technological and non-traditional threats, including unmanned aerial systems, cyber attacks and information warfare, besides conventional weapons and artillery. The Defence Minister also underlined the need to balance diplomacy with military preparedness, saying neither military capability without diplomacy nor diplomacy without requisite strength could adequately safeguard national interests. “India possesses both ‘Power of Argument’ and ‘Argument of Power’, and we will communicate through whichever language the other party understands best,” he said.
India's approach to national security, according to him, is closely linked to economic and energy security, as a robust economy and strong military constitute the two pillars of a country's physical power. “When the economy is strong, more resources become available for national security and defence preparedness. Only when a nation is secure do the conditions become favourable for advancing development initiatives. National security and national development complement each other,” he said.
Describing “Terrain, Technology and Thinking” as the three critical factors in warfare, Singh said the changing character of conflict required India to invest in emerging technologies and develop capabilities across drones, artificial intelligence, cyber security, electronic warfare, space and quantum technology. He said indigenous systems such as Rustom, Ghatak and Nagastra UAVs demonstrated India's growing capabilities in unmanned warfare, while drone warfare capabilities had also been demonstrated during Operation Sindoor. Singh also referred to the BrahMos missile and the development of the proposed “Sudarshan Chakra” system as examples of India's efforts to build capabilities for future combat scenarios.
