Haryana: Panchkula deploys drone for stubble burning surveillance for first time

Panchkula, Nov 3 (UNI) In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Panchkula district, the Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Department has deployed a drone to monitor incidents of paddy stubble burning, stepping up surveillance to curb crop residue fires and combat air pollution.
The drone-based monitoring will cover identified villages and sensitive areas across the district, particularly between 3 PM and 9 PM, when surveillance will be intensified to detect violations.
Deputy Director, Agriculture, Dr Rakesh Poria, said suspected incidents of stubble burning would be documented through geo-tagged photographs and video recordings, along with the exact location and time of the incident. The evidence will facilitate prompt identification of offenders and timely action by the department.
The department has warned that farmers found burning paddy stubble will face strict action under the prescribed rules. This may include registration of an FIR, issuance of a challan, and a red entry in the farmer's revenue records. Such an entry may also affect the farmer's eligibility to sell agricultural produce at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) in mandis, as per applicable rules.
The Agriculture Department has appealed to farmers across Panchkula to refrain from burning crop residue and instead adopt scientific and environment-friendly methods of stubble management.
The department emphasised that stubble burning not only contributes to air pollution but also adversely affects soil fertility, depriving the soil of valuable nutrients.
The drone surveillance initiative aims to strengthen enforcement, ensure effective monitoring of vulnerable areas, and make Panchkula district free from stubble-burning incidents. The department has stressed that active cooperation from farmers is essential to protect the environment and safeguard public health.
