Himachal : Jai Ram Thakur accuses Rahul Gandhi of seeking regime change through unrest

Shimla, Nov 3 (UNI) Leader of Opposition and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of attempting to bring about a change of government through unrest and mob mobilisation, while also criticising the state government over the reported suspension of free diagnostic tests in government hospitals.
Addressing a 'Viksit Bharat Yuva Samvad – Know Your Vote' programme at Sardar Patel University in Mandi, Thakur alleged that Rahul Gandhi and the INDIA bloc were trying to create an atmosphere of instability in the country after failing to secure public support through democratic means.
He claimed that the Congress leader wanted to achieve a 'regime change' through chaos and mob power, rather than through electoral processes. Referring to developments in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Syria, Thakur alleged that the Congress wanted to create similar conditions in India.
However, he said the country's youth stood with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would not allow such attempts to succeed.
Thakur said the enthusiasm, patriotic spirit and commitment of young people towards the country were encouraging.
He maintained that achieving the goal of a developed India required a strong, peaceful, stable and self-reliant nation, with young people playing a leading role.
Referring to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he said its objective was to ensure that incorrect names were not included and genuine voters were not excluded.
He alleged that people attending a Congress rally in Delhi two days ago had little understanding of the SIR exercise and were being misled through misinformation.
Thakur said programmes such as 'Know Your Vote' were important to counter misinformation and educate young voters about electoral processes.
Recalling his first election, he said discrepancies in the voters' list had resulted in his name being incorrectly recorded, forcing him to use the erroneous version in his nomination papers.
He said the response of young people across the country reflected their support for democratic processes and asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would continue in office and return to power in 2029.
In a separate statement, Thakur accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of compromising public healthcare by allowing free diagnostic testing facilities in government hospitals to remain suspended.
He said laboratories providing free tests had reportedly stopped functioning from Monday, forcing patients to approach expensive private diagnostic centres for investigations required for treatment.
"How can patients be treated without diagnostic tests, and how can their lives be saved without treatment?" he asked, urging the Chief Minister to intervene immediately and restore the facility.
Thakur alleged that the state government's healthcare policies had adversely affected public services.
He also accused the government of undermining the Himcare health insurance scheme, which provides cashless treatment to eligible beneficiaries, and claimed that the latest disruption in free diagnostic services had further burdened patients.
He demanded immediate restoration of free diagnostic testing facilities across government hospitals in the state.
