Kharge warns Vijayendra, Narayanaswamy of jail as BJP-Cong war of words escalates

Bengaluru, Nov 5 (UNI) Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge on Wednesday issued a strong warning to BJP state president Vijayendra Yediyurappa and Legislative Council Leader of Opposition Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, saying their provocative and derogatory remarks against Congress leaders and workers could land them in jail if they continued.
Raising the stakes in the escalating political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BJP, Kharge said the government would not tolerate threats and personal attacks under the guise of political criticism and would initiate legal proceedings against those responsible.
"We will not act unjustly or put anyone behind bars without reason. We will initiate action legally. If they continue making such statements, the situation will become difficult for them in the future, and they may end up behind bars," he told reporters here.
Kharge's warning came in the wake of two separate controversies involving the BJP leaders, including Narayanaswamy's alleged threat that Congress workers would be cut into pieces and thrown into the Arabian Sea.
The statement was reportedly made while addressing a BJP foot march in Kolar organised under the slogan 'Save Democracy, Eradicate Anarchy', in a counter to the Congress agitation against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The remarks triggered a sharp backlash from the Congress, which termed them a direct threat to political opponents and questioned the BJP's political culture. Narayanaswamy subsequently denied making the statement, claiming that his words had been distorted.
Taking particular exception to Narayanaswamy's conduct, Kharge questioned his restraint and recalled that the BJP leader had allegedly called him a dog during a visit to his native place.
Kharge also targeted Vijayendra over his recent remarks against Congress workers on the reservation issue and the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) controversy.
Questioning Vijayendra's understanding of the Karnataka High Court's observations on the reservation issue, Kharge accused him of selectively interpreting the judgment while conveniently overlooking the court's criticism of the previous BJP government.
He said the prescribed procedure for increasing reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes required the proposal to be placed before the respective National Commissions and questioned why the previous BJP government had failed to complete the process.
The latest exchange has added another flashpoint to the Congress-BJP confrontation in Karnataka, with the SIR controversy, reservation policy and alleged threats against political workers becoming fresh battlegrounds.
Kharge maintained that the government would follow due legal process and would not hesitate to act if provocative statements continued.
