Jharkhand Congress accuses BJP of double standards over property registration surcharge

Ranchi, Oct 29 (UNI) The Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday accused the BJP of double standards over the proposed additional 10 per cent surcharge on property registration, asking the opposition party to explain why a similar concession for women introduced by its government was withdrawn in 2020.
Congress state secretary and spokesperson Rishikesh Singh said the BJP was engaging in political opportunism by criticising the Hemant Soren government's decision while avoiding questions about its own tenure.
Singh said the BJP should first clarify whether the 10 per cent surcharge would apply to the total property value or to the stamp duty and registration fees. If the combined stamp duty and registration charges amounted to Rs 1 lakh, the additional surcharge would be Rs 10,000, not 10 per cent of the property's total value, he said. He acknowledged, however, that the additional charge would ultimately burden buyers.
Referring to the provision allowing property registration in women's names for Re 1, Singh said the scheme was introduced by the Raghubar Das government in 2017 and withdrawn in May 2020. He asked the BJP to explain why it had discontinued the scheme, arguing that women's empowerment required effective policies rather than political statements.
Singh said urban local bodies needed resources for basic services such as roads, drainage, drinking water, and sanitation, but revenue generation should not disregard the financial burden on citizens. He called for transparency and accountability in the use of the additional revenue.
The Congress spokesperson said his party would continue to question decisions that imposed an unnecessary financial burden on the public and urged the BJP to offer concrete alternatives instead of making political allegations.
