Jharkhand: HC stays HEC bypass encroachment drive

Ranchi, Sep 18 (UNI) The Jharkhand High Court on Friday directed the Ranchi administration to stop the ongoing encroachment removal drive along HEC Bypass Road and allowed occupants time till Dec 31 to remove encroachments themselves.
Justice Ananda Sen passed the direction while hearing a petition filed by 31 people against the administration's action.
The court directed Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri and Senior Superintendent of Police to immediately ensure compliance with its order and stop the ongoing action.
The court took note of the monsoon season and forthcoming festivals while directing that immediate administrative action for removal of encroachments be stopped.
The occupants, however, have been directed to remove encroachments from government land themselves by Dec 31.
Advocates Akhouri Avinash Kumar and Vipul Poddar appeared for the petitioners. According to Kumar, the petitioners had informed the court that demolition of some houses was continuing despite the court's directions.
Following the submission, the Deputy Commissioner and SSP joined the proceedings through video conference and were directed to ensure immediate compliance.
The encroachment removal drive had been underway along HEC Bypass Road for several days. The action had earlier led to a confrontation between local residents and police, during which police resorted to lathi-charge after stone-pelting, according to the report.
