Rourkela Steel Plant deploys Prahari AI to strengthen workplace safety

Bhubaneswar, Sep 18 (UNI) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has developed and deployed an Artificial Intelligence-based video analytics system, “Prahari AI – Intrusion Detection with Digital Fencing,” to strengthen real-time surveillance and prevent unauthorised entry into critical and restricted areas of the plant.
The AI-powered solution is part of RSP’s ongoing efforts to harness digital technologies to enhance workplace safety and enable faster intervention in potentially hazardous situations.
The system has been conceptualised, developed and implemented in-house by the Digitalization Department under the guidance of CGM (NPM & Digitalization) R. K. Muduli and GM I/C (C&IT) Sumita Bhattacharya.
Prahari AI uses AI-enabled video analytics to continuously monitor designated safety and restricted zones through existing CCTV cameras or newly installed cameras, depending on site requirements.
RSP sources said digital fencing has been created around identified critical areas, allowing the system to automatically detect the entry of unauthorised personnel into these zones in real time.
Once an intrusion is detected, the system triggers an immediate alert, enabling personnel at the site to take timely safety measures. An audio buzzer has also been installed to provide an instant audible warning whenever an unauthorised entry is detected within a digitally fenced zone.
The system has so far been successfully deployed at two locations in the New Plate Mill (NPM) – the Dividing Shear Area and the DSTS Area – besides the U-Seal Area of Blast Furnace-5.
The deployment marks a significant step towards integrating AI with the plant’s existing CCTV infrastructure to create a proactive safety-monitoring mechanism rather than relying solely on conventional surveillance.
The successful development and implementation of Prahari AI also demonstrates the capability of RSP’s Digitalization Department to develop and deploy AI-based solutions tailored to the plant’s specific operational and safety requirements.
RSP said the technology has the potential to be extended to other critical areas of the plant, further strengthening its efforts to build safer and smarter operations through digitalisation and Artificial Intelligence.
