Jharkhand: Speaker Mahato leads India at global climate adaptation workshop

Ranchi, Sep 18 (UNI) Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato returned to Ranchi on Friday after serving as India's lead speaker at a Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference workshop on climate adaptation and resilience in Cape Town.
Mahato's suggestions made during the workshop were taken on record for recommendation, according to a Jharkhand Assembly release.
Addressing the workshop, Mahato said climate adaptation should not be viewed merely as an environmental issue but linked with development, public safety and protection of livelihoods.
He stressed the need for water conservation, rainwater harvesting, preparedness and climate-resilient infrastructure in view of erratic rainfall, water scarcity and rising temperatures.
Highlighting Jharkhand's circumstances, Mahato spoke about the interlinkages between forests, water, agriculture, mineral resources and the livelihoods of tribal communities. He called for climate adaptation strategies aligned with local requirements and stronger legislative, budgetary, monitoring and representative mechanisms.
He said resilience should not be seen as an obstacle to development but as a foundation for better and sustainable development, and argued that parliaments should become institutions of preparedness in addition to being forums for debate.
Mahato also addressed a workshop on “Accessible Parliaments: Inclusion for People with Disabilities”, highlighting measures including the Unique Disability ID, Accessible India Campaign and electoral facilities for persons with disabilities.
Mahato had left Ranchi on September 9 as a delegate to the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference.
