Kangra gets formal nod for electric bus depot, operations to begin soon

Kangra, Sep 26 (UNI) The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) Board of Directors has formally approved the establishment of an electric bus depot in Kangra, paving the way for its operation shortly.
The decision was taken at the 164th meeting of the HRTC Board of Directors.
HRTC Vice-Chairman Ajay Verma thanked the state government and Deputy Chief Minister for the initiative and appreciated officials and employees who facilitated the approval.
Verma said the Kangra electric bus depot would initially operate 20 buses.
An electric charging station has already been installed at the Kangra bus stand, with two buses capable of being charged simultaneously and provision for charging six buses inside the shed.
The depot office will be established on the upper floor of the bus stand and will include facilities for booking, the bus stand in-charge and the Regional Manager.
Initially, the additional charge of RM Kangra will remain with the Dharamshala RM.
He said the new depot would also create employment opportunities for local youth.
Kangra currently has 27 HRTC buses.
Verma said the HRTC Board had also approved the purchase of 250 diesel buses and 100 midi buses, besides taking steps towards procuring around 1,000 new electric buses.
More long-range electric buses would be added to the fleet in the future.
He said the process for establishing electric bus depots at Kangra and Haroli had formally begun, while Nadaun and Theog were also likely to receive new electric buses under a Central government scheme.
HRTC has also started bus services from Kangra to AIIMS Bilaspur, with another service planned soon to cover more areas of the Kangra Assembly constituency.
Verma said the corporation had introduced the Him Bus Card for women, offering eligible passengers a 50 per cent concession in bus fares.
The proposed Him Bus Plus Card would be available to all citizens and provide a five per cent discount on a journey, with the concession increasing according to the number of journeys.
He said HRTC was working to expand services on long-distance routes, including Kangra-Hoshiarpur, while new bus stands nearing completion would further strengthen modern, environment-friendly and passenger-oriented public transport in the state.
