Kangra intensifies crackdown on drug traffickers; assets worth Rs 37.84 crore seized

Ashok Raina
Dharamshala, Oct 30 (UNI) Additional Deputy Commissioner Vinay Kumar on Friday directed officials to intensify raids against drug traffickers and take strict action against those involved in the illegal narcotics trade in Kangra district.
Chairing the monthly review meeting of the District-level Narcotics Coordination Centre (NCORD) Committee at the NIC conference hall here, he said that 313 cases related to drug trafficking had been registered in the district so far this year, with action taken against 517 people, including 483 men and 34 women.
He said properties worth Rs 37.84 crore, allegedly acquired from proceeds of the illegal drug trade, had been seized in the district.
These included assets worth Rs 31.72 crore in Nurpur subdivision, Rs 5.46 crore in Kangra and Rs 65.52 lakh in Dehra subdivision.
Vinay Kumar directed all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to constitute subdivision-level NCORD committees at the earliest, on the lines of the district-level committee.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the functioning of committees constituted at the panchayat level, he stressed that these bodies must proactively share information about drug trafficking activities with the concerned authorities.
He said panchayats had an important role in gathering local intelligence about the illegal drug trade.
Emphasising the need to reduce the demand for narcotics, the ADC directed officials to strengthen awareness campaigns across the district. He asked all government and private higher educational institutions to activate their anti-drug clubs and educate students about the harmful effects of substance abuse.
He also directed schools to install signboards displaying the emergency helpline number 112 to facilitate reporting of drug-related activities.
The concerned departments were further asked to regularly disseminate messages related to the anti-chitta campaign through various publicity platforms and ensure active public participation.
Among those present at the meeting were ACP RP Jaswal, District Panchayat Officer Sachin, SDM Dharamshala Mohit, DSP Jail Sanjeev Kumar, Deputy Directors Ajay Samyal and Balwinder Guleria, HRTC representative Sunil Kumar, District Programme Officer (Medical) Dr Anuradha and Dr Sukhjeet from Tanda Medical College, besides officials of various departments.
