Kerala HC seeks report, case registered against judge

Kochi, Oct 26 (UNI) The Kerala High Court has sought a report on the fatal Cheranalloor road accident in Kochi, while police have registered a case against the father of the 17-year-old accused of driving the car that killed a 55-year-old scooter rider.
The case against the judge, who is the registered owner of the Mercedes-Benz involved in the accident, was filed under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, which prescribes liability for offences involving juveniles driving vehicles. The development followed protests by the victim's family, who demanded stringent action against those responsible.
Police said the minor was driving at a speed exceeding 100 kmph when the accident occurred. Investigators recovered mobile phone footage showing him driving at high speed, providing additional evidence in the case.
The victim, Jayabalakrishnan, a native of Manjali, was returning home on his scooter after closing his food stall when the car allegedly hit his vehicle from behind around 0220 hours on Sunday. He died in the accident.
The teenager was initially granted bail after being booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence. Following public protests and a review of the evidence, police added charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and took him into custody again. The Juvenile Justice Board subsequently granted him bail.
Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh said the investigation would be handed over to the District Crime Branch. Police would also approach the district court seeking cancellation of the juvenile's bail, he said.
The victim's relatives have raised serious allegations over the handling of the case and demanded a thorough investigation without preferential treatment. The incident has triggered widespread public concern over underage driving and the accountability of vehicle owners.
