Kesari Ganeshotsav held in The Netherlands

Pune, Sep 22 (UNI) The annual Kesari Ganeshotsav associated with Pune’s historic Kesari Wada was organised by the Netherlands Marathi Mandal in The Hague, with participation of the Kesari Wada Ganpati festival committee.
Dr Rohit Tilak, chairman of the Kesari Wada Ganeshotsav and a descendant of freedom fighter and public Ganeshotsav pioneer Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, carried a replica of the Kesari Wada Ganpati idol to the Netherlands. The idol was formally installed by him at a ceremony in The Hague.
The event was attended by The Hague Deputy Mayor Kavish Patriman and representatives of the Embassy of India.
Dutch tabla player Heiko Dijker, known for his association with Indian classical music, was presented the 11th Rashmin Award by Dr Tilak. The award comprised replicas of Lokmanya Tilak’s traditional turban and inkpot, along with a reproduction of the first edition of the newspaper Kesari.
The programme included a dhol-tasha performance, a palkhi procession, cultural programmes by local artistes and competitions for children.
Dr Tilak also presented the Netherlands Marathi Mandal with a copy of Lokmanya Tilak’s 'Gitarahasya'.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Tilak said the public Ganesh festival was started by Lokmanya Tilak to bring people together and facilitate social awareness during the freedom movement. He said the festival provided a platform for interaction and exchange of ideas and could continue to serve as a means of bringing communities together.
Sachin Angal, president of the Netherlands Marathi Mandal, vice-president Pratik Pendse, Gaurav Pendharkar and volunteers were involved in organising the event.
The Kesari Wada Ganeshotsav committee and the Netherlands Marathi Mandal have decided to organise the festival annually in Europe, according to the organisers. UNI SP SS
