Maha: Panvel-Karjat double rail line nears completion, local train services likely by Diwali

Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) Commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are likely to get another suburban rail route soon, with local train services between Panvel and Karjat expected to commence around Diwali, subject to the mandatory safety inspection and approval.
The 29.6-km Panvel-Karjat double-line project has reached the final stage, with nearly 99 per cent of the work completed. Railway authorities have begun preparations to introduce passenger services on the new corridor. However, the route will have to be inspected and cleared by the Commissioner of Railway Safety before it can be opened for regular operations.
The project, estimated to cost around Rs 2,782 crore, will provide an alternative suburban rail corridor between Panvel and Karjat and improve connectivity between Navi Mumbai, Karjat and the Raigad region.
The new corridor has five stations — Panvel, Chikhale, Poyanje, Chowk and Karjat. The name of Mohape station has been changed to Poyanje.
Work on the stations is also progressing rapidly. The station building at Panvel has been completed, while minor works at the remaining four stations are in the final stages. All major and minor bridges, five road overbridges and 16 road underpasses have also been completed.
The two railway overbridges on the Panvel and Karjat sides have been completed, and track-linking work is currently underway. Track work through the underpass beneath the Pune Expressway has also been completed.
The new corridor includes three tunnels through the hilly terrain, with a combined length of about 3.164 km. The 2.625-km-long Vavrely tunnel will be the longest tunnel on the Mumbai suburban railway network.
Once operational, the new line is expected to reduce the travel time between Panvel and Karjat to around 35 to 40 minutes, providing commuters with a faster and additional suburban rail connectivity option. UNI SP SS
