Mahatma Phule’s social reform message presented through theatre

Pune, Sep 22 ( UNI) The social reform movement and lifelong struggle of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule against caste-based inequality were portrayed through the Marathi play ‘Satyashodhak Mahatma’, staged as part of the Pune Festival at Balgandharva Rangmandir here on Tuesday.
The play presents Phule’s efforts for social equality, women’s education and the rights of marginalised sections of society. His questioning of prevailing social practices, his reformist ideas and the impact of his social work on his personal and family life are also depicted in the production.
It depicts several important phases of Phule’s life, including his advocacy of women’s education, his decision to educate women in his own household, the Kashibai episode, his efforts to spread social awareness, his decision to adopt Yashwant, and the establishment of the Satyashodhak Samaj.
Phule’s akhand compositions used in the play were also presented at different points during the performance and received a response from the audience. The production uses a simple stage setting and incorporates the compositions to underline the central themes of the play.
The play was presented by Samvad Pune on the occasion of Mahatma Phule’s bicentenary year. Sunil Mahajan presented the production, while Gauri Rahul Dhole Patil and Nikita Moghe were the producers. Dr Ravi Chaudhari and Ketaki Borkar provided production assistance.
The original script was written by noted writer Ramnath Chavan, while the stage adaptation and direction were by Yogesh Soman. Ganesh Inamdar, Arundhati Kamathe, Gayatri Wadkar, Dilip Angre, Vasant Bhadke, Ayush Wagh and Omkar Mohite essayed various roles.
Before the performance, the artistes and members associated with the production were felicitated by Pune Festival president Krishnakumar Goel, chief coordinator of cultural programmes Dr Satish Desai and trustee Mohan Tillu. Kamaltai Dhole Patil, Poona Club president Rahul Dhole Patil and Phule Hostel trustee Arun Kudale were also felicitated.
Producer Gauri Dhole Patil said the play was being staged again to mark Phule’s bicentenary year and to present his ideas on social equality to contemporary audiences.
Goel said theatre could serve as a medium to take Phule’s message of social equality to a wider audience.
