Kolhapur: SSS president urges farmers to keep harvested sugarcane in fields for 8-10 days and not send to the mills

Kolhapur, Oct 21 (UNI) Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) national president and former MP Raju Shetty, in a strict warning to sugar factories, stated that they must not begin their crushing operations for the current season until a "fair and acceptable" First Installment Price (first advance) is officially declared for the farmers.
In a press conference held here this evening, Shetty, reaffirming the call to action from the highway blockade, urged farmers to keep their harvested sugarcane in their fields for an additional eight to 10 days rather than sending it to the mills.
He emphasized that stalling the supply is necessary to make the government and factory owners realize the gravity of the farmers' demands.
He said that the state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should call a meeting with sugar factory owners to discuss sugarcane farmers' demands, like his counterpart the Karnataka chief minister called a meeting to discuss farmers' demands.
He announced a major intensification of the sugarcane price agitation during his press conference.
He said the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana will launch a massive motorcycle rally across Kolhapur district on Sunday, October 25, 2026, to escalate their pressure on the government and sugar millers.
The ongoing agitation continues to demand a highly revised pricing framework, seeking a rate of ₹5,500 per tonne for sugarcane, alongside key policy adjustments regarding ethanol and sugar Minimum Support Prices (MSP).
