Loharu Canal water shortage: Supply restored to tail-end villages, farmers

Bhiwani, Oct 18 (UNI) Irrigation water has finally reached the tail end of Haryana's Loharu Canal after farmers from Kushalpura and neighbouring villages complained of inadequate supply, prompting the state government to intervene and promise an additional two-and-a-half days of water release.
The Irrigation Department restored the supply following directions from Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Shruti Choudhry, who ordered immediate action after farmers, led by the Bharatiya Kisan union (BKU), raised concerns over water shortages affecting their fields.
The department also assured farmers that steps would be taken to prevent upstream water theft, identified as one of the factors disrupting supply to the canal's lower reaches.
Farmers had approached irrigation officials seeking adequate water for their crops after insufficient flow in the canal created difficulties in irrigating agricultural land.
Taking up the complaints, Choudhry directed officials to remove obstacles affecting water distribution and ensure that villages at the canal's tail end received their due supply.
Following departmental intervention, water reached the affected tail-end areas, while officials assured farmers of an additional two-and-a-half days of supply to address their irrigation requirements.
The minister also ordered regular monitoring of canal discharge and distribution, directing officials to ensure that farmers in downstream villages were not deprived of irrigation water.
She instructed the department to resolve complaints within a fixed timeframe and take corrective measures wherever interruptions or irregularities in water distribution were detected.
Choudhry said ensuring adequate irrigation water, particularly for farmers at the tail end of canals, remained a priority of the Haryana government.
