Maha: AIIMS Nagpur doctors launch protest , suspend non-emergency services over assault

Nagpur, Sep 24 (UNI) All junior and senior resident doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, today launched a protest and suspended non-emergency services after a doctor was allegedly assaulted inside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) by relatives of a patient.
According to the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), the incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a group of attendants allegedly entered the ICU and physically assaulted a resident doctor on duty.
The association claimed that the attack took place while the doctor was attending to a critically ill patient.
Condemning the incident, resident doctors began a sit-in protest on the hospital campus and withdrew from routine and non-emergency services.
Emergency, trauma and critical care services, however, continue to function to ensure that patients requiring urgent medical attention are not affected.
Speaking to UNI, Dr Rishabh Dwivedi said emergency and critical-care services, including ICUs, would continue to operate.
He said the withdrawal of non-emergency services would remain in force until the administration provides a satisfactory, written and time-bound response to all the doctors' demands.
The protesting doctors demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the assault, registration of a stringent criminal case and enhanced security measures across the hospital premises.
"The attendants were able to engage in such activities because they were allegedly backed by some MPs, Ministers. This is precisely why we are demanding the the removal of the VVIP patient culture from our institute," he said.
The protesters also sought deployment of additional security personnel and strict enforcement of protocols regulating entry into sensitive hospital areas.
RDA representatives said incidents of violence against healthcare workers have become a matter of serious concern and stressed that doctors must be provided a safe working environment.
They warned that the agitation could be intensified if their demands are not met or addressed promptly.
Hospital authorities have initiated an inquiry into the incident, while discussions are underway with the protesting doctors to restore normal services.
Police have also begun an investigation into the alleged assault.
