Maha: Fadnavis stresses on preserving India's ancient educational heritage

Nagpur, Oct 24 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today stressed the need to preserve India's rich ancient educational heritage while embracing modern technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Addressing the concluding session of the 9th International Principals' Educational Conference at IIM Nagpur, Fadnavis highlighted the legacy of ancient universities such as Takshashila, Nalanda and Vikramshila, which attracted students from across the world.

He said India's ancient education system had contributed to the country's prominence in global trade, GDP and exports, noting that preserving this legacy was both a responsibility of the younger generation and a necessity of the present times.

Fadnavis emphasised that teachers should focus on developing critical thinking, ethical values and the ability to transform information into meaningful knowledge, particularly in the present era of information explosion.

He said the role of teachers and educators was not merely to impart knowledge but also to provide the right direction to students' thought processes. The conference offered an important platform for detailed discussions on transforming information into knowledge, he said.

Referring to the decline of ancient educational institutions following several invasions, the Chief Minister cited a survey conducted by William Adam, which documented the existence of lakhs of schools in Bengal, Bihar and Punjab and thousands of grammar schools in the Madras Presidency. He said these records reflected the richness of India's traditional education system.

Although the ancient system could not sustain itself for long, social reformers revived the cause of education through their movements, enabling the country to progress, he pointed.

Highlighting the changes being introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP), Fadnavis said the focus must now be on preparing the younger generation for the future through innovative teaching methods and the effective use of technology.

He also underscored the importance of mother-tongue education, noting that developed countries largely impart education in their respective native languages.

"We must not abandon our mother tongue, as the education systems of developed countries function in their respective mother tongues. This has been incorporated into the new National Education Policy," he said.

Fadnavis added that instead of becoming dependent on technology, students should develop the skills to use it effectively to ensure comprehensive development.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister released an e-souvenir titled "Pathey – The Golden Elixir" and presented the Nachiketa and Super Nachiketa Awards to individuals for their contributions to education and culture.
