Maha govt orders special drive to curb air pollution in Mumbai Metropolitan Region

Mumbai, Oct 24 (UNI) With Mumbai reportedly moving from fifth to third place in a ranking of the world’s most polluted cities, the Maharashtra government has directed municipal corporations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to launch a special drive to control air pollution and reduce road dust.
The state government issued the directives on Friday, calling for effective and sustained measures to improve air quality across the metropolitan region. The measures focus particularly on controlling dust generated by roads and construction activities, which are among the concerns associated with urban air pollution.
As part of the campaign, municipal corporations have been instructed to spray water on roads using sprinklers to minimise dust. Authorities have also been directed to make it mandatory for vehicles transporting construction debris and rubble to cover their loads completely.
The measure is aimed at preventing construction waste and fine dust particles from spilling onto roads or becoming airborne during transportation.
The directives come amid growing concerns over Mumbai’s deteriorating air quality and the need for stronger implementation of pollution-control measures. Effective coordination among municipal corporations and strict enforcement of the prescribed guidelines will be crucial to achieving tangible improvements in air quality.
Meanwhile, the issue of air pollution came up for discussion during the Mumbai civic body's general body meeting. Corporators expressed concern over the administration's alleged inaction and questioned the effectiveness of the measures being taken to address the problem.
The criticism highlighted the growing demand for accountability from civic authorities, particularly regarding the implementation of pollution-control regulations and the prevention of dust generated by construction and road-related activities.
The government’s latest directives place the responsibility on municipal corporations to intensify their efforts and ensure that preventive measures are implemented on the ground. Regular water sprinkling, proper covering of debris-carrying vehicles and stricter monitoring of compliance are expected to form key components of the campaign.
With air pollution emerging as a major public health and environmental concern in Mumbai, the effectiveness of the special drive will depend on consistent enforcement, monitoring and coordination between the state government and civic bodies.
