Maha: MNS leader Amit Thackeray slams police crackdown, warns of 10,000-strong mob at Shivaji Park

Mumbai, Oct 11 (UNI) Political temperature soared in the metropolis today when Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Amit Thackeray launched a blistering attack on the state government and the police administration over heavy-handed security clampdowns and arbitrary detentions at the historic Shivaji Park, Dadar in central Mumbai.
Condemning the high-security deployment that virtually transformed the iconic neighborhood into a "war zone", Thackeray accused the authorities of systematically strangulating democracy in broad daylight.
Trouble erupted after heavy police barricading and stringent checks were enforced across various arterial routes leading to Shivaji Park in the wake of ongoing protests. According to MNS leaders, the police dragnet did not spare regular pedestrians, evening walkers, senior citizens, or women frequenting the grounds.
The young MNS leader recounted that he was accosted by police personnel near a local establishment while out for a routine evening walk. Questioning the unprofessional and abrasive language allegedly used by the personnel, he asked whether local residents and citizens exercising their right to public spaces had become targets of administrative high-handedness.
"Is this how you speak to citizens? Are there no basic codes of conduct for how police should treat people coming to walk at Shivaji Park?" Thackeray questioned while speaking to reporters, adding that several innocent bystanders and youths had been detained without provocation.
Drawing grim parallels with recent heavy-handed police actions during demonstrations in Delhi—where protesters were allegedly cornered and female activists mistreated—the MNS leader expressed deep dismay that a similar suppression of democratic dissent was being replicated in Maharashtra.
In a direct and fiery ultimatum to the administration, Thackeray declared that the day marked the final limit of peaceful compliance. Issuing a stern warning, he stated: "Today is the police's final day. Starting tomorrow, I will bring a mob of 10,000. Let's see you try and touch our protest." He asserted that he would be back at the grounds daily and challenged authorities to detain him if they dared.
Refusing to back down, Thackeray marched directly to the Shivaji Park Police Station to register an official objection and demand the immediate, unconditional release of all detained protesters and citizens. He maintained that while the MNS holds the Maharashtra Police force in high esteem for its stellar legacy, political directives weaponizing the force against peaceful citizens will face staunch resistance.
Meanwhile, localized tensions persisted as demonstrators argued that they were peaceful citizens exercising their fundamental rights, even as opposition factions rallied against the administration's stringent containment measures.
