Maruti Suzuki goes green at core; first hydrogen plant operational in Manesar

Panchkula, Sep 24 (UNI) Maruti Suzuki India Limited has commissioned its first 300 kW green hydrogen electrolyser plant at its Manesar facility in Haryana, marking a significant step in the automaker's push towards cleaner manufacturing energy.
Launched as a pilot project, the plant will produce green hydrogen to be blended with natural gas for powering the company's manufacturing operations. The initiative is designed to harness surplus solar energy generated at the Manesar plant, particularly during holidays when the power would otherwise go unused. By converting this excess solar energy into green hydrogen, Maruti Suzuki aims to store it for later use in manufacturing, ensuring maximum utilisation of its renewable energy capacity.
The project draws inspiration from parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation's core philosophy of Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi, which stands for smaller, fewer, lighter, shorter, and more beautiful. The company said this approach continues to guide its efforts to improve resource efficiency and optimise energy consumption across its operations, according to a press release issued on Thursday.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the company has adopted a multi-pathway approach for both its products and renewable energy solutions in manufacturing. He said the commissioning of the 300 kW green hydrogen plant aligns with the Government of India's Green Hydrogen Mission.
"This, along with the expansion of solar, biogas, and the installation of a battery energy storage system, reflects our commitment to transition to cleaner and sustainable energy solutions," Takeuchi said.
He added that as India emerges as a global manufacturing powerhouse, its competitive edge will depend not only on cost and quality but also on carbon intensity. "With such initiatives, we are building capability today so that we can support a low-carbon and more energy-efficient manufacturing ecosystem tomorrow," he said.
Maruti Suzuki has set an ambitious target to reduce its manufacturing carbon footprint from 615,000 tonnes currently to 266,000 tonnes by the financial year 2030-31.
Beyond the green hydrogen pilot, the company is accelerating efforts to cut carbon emissions across its manufacturing network through a diversified clean energy strategy. This includes in-house solar power generation, procurement of renewable energy from government sources, and agreements with third-party providers for solar and wind power.
At its Kharkhoda facility, the company is nearing completion of a 10-tonne-per-day biogas plant, expected to be commissioned by the financial year 2026-27. The site has also brought a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System online. Maruti Suzuki has already begun integrating compressed biogas as process fuel, and its board has approved four compressed biogas projects with a total investment of INR 5,610 million.
Meanwhile, Suzuki Motor Corporation, in partnership with the National Dairy Development Board and dairy industry unions, is setting up 10 biogas plants across India, three of which are already operational in Gujarat.
With the launch of the pilot green hydrogen plant, Maruti Suzuki has added a new dimension to its clean energy strategy, reinforcing its roadmap towards sustainable manufacturing.
