Mizoram seeks greater Centre support for Northeast education challenges

Aizawl, Sep 18 (UNI) Mizoram Education Minister Vanlalthlana has urged the Centre to address the common challenges faced by northeastern states in improving education, saying their needs should not be overlooked in policy planning in comparison with larger states.

Speaking at the North East Education Conclave 2026 held at Chümoukedima in Nagaland, Vanlalthlana highlighted Mizoram’s progress in education as well as the challenges it faces in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

He said several northeastern states face similar problems, including declining enrolment in government schools and a shortage of students in lower classes. While many elementary schools in rural areas have only a small number of students, relatively few villages have schools offering education up to the secondary level, he said.

The minister also highlighted shortages of personnel in District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs), as well as difficulties with solar power and internet connectivity. Financial constraints in recruiting additional personnel and developing infrastructure were also among the challenges, he cited.

Vanlalthlana urged the Centre to recognise that these were not problems specific to Mizoram but were shared by many northeastern states and to develop measures to address them.

On efforts to improve teaching quality, he said Mizoram had introduced the Standardised Assessment for Elementary Schools and was making use of the Vidya Samiksha Kendra. The state has also launched Project Intodelh to teach students financial management and entrepreneurship skills to prepare them for adulthood.

The Mizoram delegation also submitted proposals at the conclave on the implementation of Samagra Shiksha 3.0 and PM-USHA, as well as approaches to education development suited to the state’s geography and the living conditions of its people.

The delegation included members of the Mizoram Education Reforms Committee, SCERT, Directorate of School Education, Samagra Shiksha and Higher and Technical Education departments.
