Monsoon Withdrawal Begins; New Weather System May Trigger Rain in Mah from Sept 25-28

Pune, Sep 20 (UNI) The southwest monsoon has begun its retreat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announcing that withdrawal has commenced from parts of west Rajasthan.
At the same time, a low-pressure area has developed over the Bay of Bengal and is likely to intensify over the next few days, potentially bringing another spell of rain to several parts of Maharashtra and other regions.
According to the IMD forecast, rainfall is likely in several parts of Maharashtra between September 25 and 28. Vidarbha and Marathwada are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places, while other parts of the state may also experience renewed showers.
The normal date for the onset of monsoon withdrawal from west Rajasthan is September 17. However, the retreat has been delayed this year and began about two days later. The IMD said an anti-cyclonic circulation has developed over west Rajasthan, while the region has experienced dry weather for five consecutive days. Satellite observations have also indicated a decline in atmospheric moisture, supporting the assessment that the monsoon has started withdrawing from the region.
The southern boundary of the retreating monsoon currently passes through Ramgarh, Mohangarh, Phalodi and Khajuwala. The weather department expects the monsoon to withdraw from additional parts of Rajasthan as well as some areas of Saurashtra, Kutch and Punjab during the next three to four days.
While the monsoon retreat has begun, another significant weather system is developing over the Bay of Bengal. A low-pressure area formed over the north Andaman Sea on Saturday night. The system is likely to move northwestwards and could intensify into a depression by September 21. It may further strengthen into a deep depression by September 22, depending on prevailing atmospheric conditions.
The system is expected to move towards the coastal areas of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh. Weather experts have also indicated the possibility of the system intensifying further, with conditions potentially favouring the formation of a cyclonic storm around September 23.
According to the GFS model, after gaining strength, the system could move inland from the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast towards Madhya Pradesh. If the system follows the projected track, it could influence weather conditions over Maharashtra, resulting in rainfall across several parts of the state between September 25 and 28.
Vidarbha and Marathwada could receive spells of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places during this period, while other regions of Maharashtra may also witness increased rainfall activity.
