Mumbai to become India’s 1st international education hub with global uiversities: Maha CM

Mumbai, June 14 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Saturday a landmark initiative to transform Mumbai and Navi Mumbai into India’s first international education hub, bringing world-class foreign universities to Indian soil.
At the ‘Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City’ event held at the Taj Hotel, Letters of Intent (LoIs) were signed with five renowned global universities under the National Education Policy (NEP), signalling a new era for higher education in the state.
Addressing the gathering, which included Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, State Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, UGC Chairman Vinit Joshi, and representatives from the UK, Australia, the USA, and Italy, Fadnavis emphasised that Indian students will no longer need to travel abroad to access top-tier education.
The University of Aberdeen (Scotland), University of York (UK), University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology (USA), and Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy) will establish full-fledged campuses near the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
This educational zone will complement other upcoming developments such as MedCity, Sports City, and Innovation City, positioning Mumbai as a global centre for learning and research.
Fadnavis highlighted that these campuses will align closely with the objectives of the NEP 2020, leveraging Maharashtra’s superior infrastructure and connectivity, including the newly operational Navi Mumbai International Airport and Atal Setu.
He also noted that the MoUs signed are just the beginning, with plans to attract at least 10 international universities in the coming years, thereby redefining Mumbai’s identity beyond finance and entertainment.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan praised the initiative, calling Mumbai a “city of dreams” poised to become a major education hub.
He underscored the NEP’s role in facilitating global academic collaboration, allowing foreign institutions to open branches in India and Indian institutions to expand abroad.
Pradhan cited the international expansions of premier Indian institutions like IITs, IIMs, and Symbiosis as examples of this growing trend, which promises to make world-class education more affordable and accessible.
The event also paid tribute to the victims of the recent Ahmedabad tragedy.
CIDCO managing director Vijay Singhal delivered the welcome address, and UGC chairman Vinit Joshi shared his insights on the evolving educational landscape.
Profiles of the Five Universities:
University of Aberdeen (UK): Scotland’s oldest university and the first Scottish institution to open a campus in India, with extensive collaborations across Indian premier institutions such as IITs, AIIMS, and Delhi University.
University of Western Australia: Ranked among the world’s top 100 universities and a member of Australia’s elite Group of Eight, it will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in STEM fields tailored to India’s and the global market’s needs.
University of York (UK): A research-intensive Russell Group member, offering cutting-edge courses in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, business, economics, and creative industries, designed in collaboration with global industry leaders.
Illinois Institute of Technology (USA): The first American university to independently award degrees from an Indian campus, focusing on computer science, engineering, and business, and introducing its signature ‘Elevate’ programme featuring internships and research opportunities.
Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy): A premier European design school providing internationally benchmarked courses in fashion, product design, and visual communication.
This ambitious initiative marks a significant step toward realising India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, with Mumbai emerging as a vibrant educational metropolis on the global stage.
