NALSA calls for stronger safeguards against cybercrimes targeting children

Hyderabad, Oct 4 (UNI) Supreme Court Judge and NALSA Executive Chairman Justice Vikram Nath has called for a coordinated approach involving families, schools, technology platforms and justice institutions to ensure safe digital childhoods.
Speaking at the concluding day of the two-day NALSA South Zonal Conference in Hyderabad, Justice Vikram Nath said child protection must extend to the digital world, where children face risks including grooming, cyberstalking, impersonation, trafficking, cyberbullying and circulation of child sexual abuse material.
He stressed the need for prevention, protection, investigation, legal aid and rehabilitation.
Justice Nath highlighted the importance of awareness in regional languages and urged wider publicity of helplines and reporting mechanisms, including the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, Childline 1098, Cyber Fraud Helpline 1930 and NALSA Helpline 15100.
He also stressed confidentiality, child-friendly legal services and long-term counselling and rehabilitation for victims.
Department of Justice Secretary Niraj Verma said crimes registered against children rose by 46 per cent, according to the NCRB's Crime in India 2024 report, while 89 per cent of cybercrimes against children involved child sexual abuse material.
He called for stronger cyber investigation capacity, improved coordination among agencies and dedicated cyber police stations in every district.
