‘Remove Gyanesh, save democracy’: INDIA Bloc holds statewide protest in Bihar

Patna, Oct 7 (UNI) The INDIA bloc on Wednesday staged protest marches and burnt effigies across all 534 blocks in Bihar, raising slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and accusing the Election Commission of undermining the country’s democratic and constitutional institutions.
The statewide agitation was organised under the ‘Gyanesh Bhagao, Loktantra Bachao’ (Remove Gyanesh, Save Democracy) campaign following a call by Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly and INDIA bloc leader Tejaswi Prasad Yadav.
In Patna, the INDIA bloc units of Patna Metropolitan and Patna Sadar took out a protest march from the RJD state headquarters through Veerchand Patel Path to Income Tax roundabout, where effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union Home Minister Amit Shah and Gyanesh Kumar were burnt.
Addressing the protesters, INDIA bloc leaders alleged that the Election Commission was functioning as a "puppet" of the BJP and accused the ruling establishment of weakening democratic and constitutional institutions.
They alleged that Bihar, described as the "motherland of democracy", was deliberately chosen for the first implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as part of an alleged attempt to weaken the democratic process. The leaders claimed that the "truth" behind the exercise had now come before the people.
RJD state spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad said the INDIA bloc's campaign under Tejashwi Yadav's leadership would continue until the alleged electoral irregularities were exposed.
He said the opposition alliance would continue to raise its voice "from the streets to the Assembly" and demand fresh elections in Bihar.
The protesters raised slogans against the union government and the CEC. They burnt effigies at the Income Tax roundabout. Ahmad said similar protest marches and effigy-burning programmes were organised in all 534 blocks of the state during the day.
The INDIA bloc has announced another major programme in Patna on Thursday, when Tejaswi Yadav will lead a march from the Shaheed Smarak to Raj Bhavan. The march is scheduled to begin at 11 am and will be attended by leaders of all constituent parties of the alliance, besides sitting and former MPs, MLAs and MLCs and a large number of party workers.
Similar sit-ins and protest marches are also scheduled to be held in all districts, Ahmad said.
A large number of INDIA bloc leaders and workers participated in the protest.
