Suvendu announces jobs, pay hike and education schemes ahead of Durga Puja

Kolkata, Oct 5 (UNI) Ahead of Durga Puja, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a series of measures, including new government jobs, a pay hike for temporary workers, increased food allowances for SC and ST hostel students, and a new higher-education scheme for unmarried women.
Addressing reporters after a state Cabinet meeting at Nabanna on Monday, Adhikari said the monthly allowance for ‘Karmabandhus’, sanitation workers under the Land and Land Reforms Department, would be increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000.
“The revised amount will be paid to temporary workers from this month,” he said.
The Chief Minister also announced that the state police’s emergency response number, 112, will be launched on October 10, coinciding with Mahalaya.
On the same day, 400 vehicles and 450 motorcycles will be handed over to various police stations at an event at the Brigade Parade Ground.
The following day, October 11, appointment letters will be issued to around 12,000 recruits in the first batch of the state police, Adhikari said.
On government recruitment, the Chief Minister announced that 14,454 posts would be filled across various departments.
“The recruitment process is expected to be completed within six to eight months through the Public Service Commission and the Police Recruitment Board,” he said.
Vacancies will be filled in departments including forests, fire services, prisons, home affairs and hill affairs, among others.
The government also announced an increase in the food allowance for SC and ST students living in hostels. The allocation has been raised from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,300 per student.
In another education-related announcement, the state government said it would introduce the ‘Bhagini Nivedita Scheme’ for higher education.
Under the scheme, unmarried women pursuing higher studies will receive total financial assistance of Rs 50,000 over three years.
Adhikari said the government would undertake further measures in the coming months to strengthen employment and public services across the state.
