Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd starts building fifth ship for German shipping company

Kolkata, Oct 29 (UNI) Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) on Thursday advanced its largest commercial shipbuilding export order with the keel laying of the fifth Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) for German shipowner Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG, strengthening the Kolkata-based shipyard's foothold in the global commercial shipping market.
The keel laying marks the first vessel under the second of three contracts between GRSE and the German company for a total of 12 CORAL 7500 deadweight-tonne (DWT) MPVs. The ceremony was attended by senior officials of GRSE, Carsten Rehder and the classification society DNV.
Designed as versatile commercial cargo ships, the MPVs can carry different types of freight in a single vessel, including bulk, general and project cargo. The GRSE vessels will also be capable of carrying containers on their hatch covers and multiple wind-turbine blades on deck, allowing them to handle oversized and specialised cargo.
The first contract, signed in June 2024, covered four vessels, while a second contract signed in October 2024 covers another four. The fifth vessel is the first being built under the second contract. A third contract, signed in September 2025, covers four hybrid-propulsion MPVs, taking the total order to 12 vessels.
Each vessel will be 120 metres long, with a beam of 17 metres, a draught of 5.85 metres and a deadweight capacity of 7,500 tonnes. The vessels will feature large cargo holds designed to accommodate a wide range of commercial freight and project cargo.
The MPVs are being developed in collaboration with German maritime companies including F.H. Bertling, ForestWave Navigation/Schulte & Bruns and Delft Shipping. Technical design support is provided by SEDS in association with GRSE, while DNV will undertake classification and certification.
GRSE's history dates back to 1884, and it has built more than 800 platforms, including 118 warships for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and friendly foreign countries. It has also built vessels for Mauritius, Seychelles and Guyana.
GRSE has seven operational units in Kolkata and one in Ranchi and can undertake concurrent construction of up to 28 ships. Besides shipbuilding and ship repair, it has diversified into engineering products including prefabricated steel bridges, deck machinery and marine diesel engine services.
