Three senior Maoist leaders surrender before Bengal Police in Bankura

Bankura, Sep 23 (UNI) In a major setback to Left-wing extremism in the Junglemahal corridor, three senior Maoist leaders, including two carrying cash rewards, surrendered before the Bengal Police in Bankura on Wednesday.
“As per the existing surrender policy of the government, we will prescribe their rehabilitation before the Bengal Police's screening committee. Besides, criminal proceedings will continue and we will interrogate them in phases as they were named in 80 FIRs against Maoist activities in Bengal and Jharkhand,” said Anand Kumar, ADG (Western Zone).
He added, “In Bengal they were involved in a number of operations between 2006 and 2014 and then they shifted to the bordering state of Jharkhand.”
The surrendered cadres have been identified as Ram Prasad Mardi alias Sachin alias Maharaj, a Regional Committee Member carrying a reward of Rs 15 lakh, Mita alias Nayantara alias Jhuma alias Ghumo alias Pori, a Zonal Committee Member carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh, and Jaba Mahata, an overground organiser of Bengal's Belpahari squad. Police records cited by other reports identify the trio as Ramprasad Mandi, Nayantara Sahu and Jaba Mahato.
Mardi and Mita had been active in the Dalma-Ghatshila-Patamda-Bankura-Jhargram interstate corridor under the group of Central Committee Member Asim Mandal alias Akash. They surrendered at the Bankura police office with nine long firearms like AK-47 and INSAS rifles that they had snatched from police during operations. However, reports from police sources said the trio handed over two INSAS rifles and one AK-47, along with 10 magazines and 154 rounds of ammunition.
Their surrender, as ADG (Western Zone) Anand Kumar said, “was made possible after repeated efforts of SP, Bankura, PVG Satish and his team, besides good cooperation by some private individuals.”
Police said the surrenders followed months-long multi-state operations involving the CRPF, CoBRA and state police forces in the Saranda-Kolhan-Porahat forest divisions of Jharkhand. The trio had been active across Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore in Bengal, besides Jharkhand's East Singhbhum region.
“Cut off from logistics and civilian support, the leaders contacted Bankura Police through intermediaries for surrender,” an official said.
Jharkhand Police had earlier announced a Rs 1 crore bounty on Asim Mandal alias Akash and Rs 15 lakh on Ram Prasad Mardi in 2019. Mandal, who carried a total reward of Rs 2.2 crore from Jharkhand and Odisha, was arrested by the Kolkata Police STF in Purba Medinipur earlier this month.
The surrender came days after Mandal's arrest and amid sustained security operations against Maoist networks in the Bengal-Jharkhand region. Police officials said the latest development could help dismantle the remaining network in the Bengal-Jharkhand-Odisha tri-junction.
