Gas pipeline to reach Aizawl by 2028

Aizawl, Oct 26 (UNI) The 119.45-km Panisagar–Aizawl gas pipeline is expected to reach Mamit town by March–April 2027 and Sihhmui in Aizawl district by March–April 2028, with the Mizoram government pushing for faster construction to ease the state’s dependence on LPG cylinders.
Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B. Lalchhanzova reviewed the progress of the project during an inspection at Tuidam in Mamit district on Monday, urging the executing agency to accelerate the work and ensure timely completion.
The pipeline, being built by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) under the Northeast Gas Grid Project, is intended to connect Mizoram with the Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL). The project has an allocated budget of Rs 491 crore.
Lalchhanzova said disruptions in global energy supplies had contributed to periodic shortages of LPG in Mizoram, underlining the need for alternative sources of fuel. Once the pipeline becomes operational, access to piped natural gas is expected to improve and reduce the state’s reliance on LPG cylinders.
The minister said the Northeast Gas Grid Project involved an investment of approximately Rs 9,265 crore to develop a network of 1,656 km of gas pipelines across the northeastern states.
Mamit and Aizawl districts will be the initial focus of the pipeline project in Mizoram. Besides providing natural gas for domestic use, the availability of gas could also facilitate the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles, potentially reducing dependence on conventional liquid fuels.
The minister asked IGGL officials to expedite construction and assured them of the state government’s full cooperation.
He also stressed the need for coordination among government departments, district administrations and local communities to prevent delays and resolve problems encountered during implementation.
Road conditions along the approach to the Tuidam project site were among the issues reviewed during the inspection. Around 1.5 km of the pipeline route requires widening at several points. IGGL and Public Works Department officials discussed how to carry out the necessary work in coordination with ongoing road repairs so that neither activity would obstruct the other.
The pipeline will have a diameter of 12 inches and a wall thickness of 7.14 mm. Its infrastructure will include six sectionalising valve stations, one dispatch terminal and one receiving terminal.
Of the total 119.45-km route, 15.105 km will pass through six villages in Tripura, while the remaining 104.345 km will traverse 20 villages in Mizoram. Cortech International Limited is carrying out the pipeline-laying work under IGGL.
The project is expected to strengthen Mizoram’s energy infrastructure by establishing a direct connection to the natural gas network in the Northeast. Its completion would provide an additional source of fuel for households and open up the possibility of wider natural gas use in transport and other sectors.
The minister was accompanied during the inspection by Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Secretary Ravi Dadich, Director R. Lalthazuala, Additional Secretary Andrew Vanlaldika, Mamit Deputy Commissioner Suvigya S. Chandra, senior PWD engineer P.C. David Lalrinliana, IGGL officials and the executive director of Metallurgical and Engineering Consultants (India) Limited (MECON).
