Sikkim representatives highlight disaster preparedness at Commonwealth conference

Gangtok, Sep 16 (UNI) Sikkim’s experience of repeated natural disasters, including earthquakes, flash floods and landslides, has added particular significance to the participation of the state’s representatives in a Commonwealth parliamentary workshop on disaster risk financing in Cape Town, South Africa.
Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Mingma Norbu Sherpa, who is also the lone member from the India Region in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Small Branches Network, attended the workshop on “Parliament’s Role in Disaster Risk Financing” at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, according to the Sikkim Assembly Secretariat.
The workshop discussed the role of parliaments in disaster preparedness, risk financing and building resilience against disasters. The issues are of particular relevance to Sikkim, a Himalayan state that has faced several major natural disasters, including earthquakes and flash floods, apart from recurring landslides.
Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Raj Kumari Thapa also participated in the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Conference workshop on “Intergenerational Equality: The Future of Parliamentary Democracy”. The session focused on strengthening inclusive and representative parliamentary democracy and ensuring that democratic institutions remain responsive to the aspirations of future generations.
The Sikkim delegation also attended plenary workshops of the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference on promoting inter-parliamentary dialogue for inclusive and fair trade and making parliaments diverse and accessible to people with disabilities.
According to the Secretariat, the participation provided Sikkim’s representatives an opportunity to exchange views and experiences with parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth on strengthening democracy, disaster resilience, inclusivity and accessibility.
