Bihar Governor calls for greater public participation to eliminate TB

Patna, Sep 30 ( UNI) Bihar Governor Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd.) on Wednesday said that awareness, accurate information and public participation are essential for eliminating tuberculosis (TB).

He stressed that information about TB testing, treatment and prevention must reach every section of society.
Speaking at a special discussion on “TB-Free Bihar” organised at Lok Bhavan under the “TB-Free India Campaign,” the Governor said TB is a curable disease.
He called for eliminating fear, misconceptions, social discrimination and stigma associated with the disease.
The Governor advised people experiencing persistent cough or other TB symptoms not to self-medicate, but to undergo testing and seek appropriate treatment.
He also highlighted the important role of family and society in supporting patients during treatment and boosting their morale.
He said TB elimination is not the responsibility of the Health Department alone and requires active participation from all government departments, social organisations and citizens.
He appreciated Bihar's recent efforts to increase TB testing and case detection, particularly the use of small mobile X-ray machines to expand screening.
The Governor said people who have recovered from TB can become effective ambassadors of the campaign by sharing their experiences and demonstrating that TB can be successfully treated and that patients can return to a normal life.
He also stressed the need for regular TB awareness programmes not only in Patna but at all district headquarters.
On the occasion, TB survivors and frontline healthcare workers were honoured, and the Governor led participants in taking a pledge to contribute to building a TB-free India.
Health Minister Nishant, Health Department Secretary Kumar Ravi, and Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chairperson of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, also addressed the programme.
State Health Society Executive Director Amit Kumar Pandey presented an overview of the current TB situation in Bihar and the measures being undertaken for its elimination.
