Village lad from Odisha heads to Nepal for international kabaddi meet

Bhubaneswar, Nov 5 (UNI) A budding kabaddi player from a remote village in Odisha’s Rayagada district, Tankadhar Naik is set to represent India at an international tournament in Nepal, following his impressive performance at the national championship.
Tankadhar from Palli village in Kashipur block of Odisha’s Rayagada district came into the spotlight after helping Odisha win a silver medal at the 6th Sports Development and Promotion Federation (SDPF) National Kabaddi Championship in Nashik.
Despite limited access to professional coaching and infrastructure in his village, he pursued the sport and has since received training support from Vedanta Aluminium.
The company has facilitated his training in Mumbai and provided coaching, sporting equipment and travel assistance.
“I come from a small village in Rayagada and never imagined that my passion for kabaddi would take me this far. The support has helped me access better training and strengthened my ambition to represent India,” Tankadhar said.
His national coach, Aniket Mhatre, an Asian Games gold medallist and coach at Midland Academy, said Tankadhar was a committed player whose performance at the national championship reflected his progress.
The Nepal tournament will provide the player an opportunity to compete at the international level as he works towards his ambition of representing the country.
