Vedanta's Rs 1 lakh crore investment to position Odisha as India's aluminium hub: Anil Agarwal

Bhubaneswar, Sep 26 (UNI) Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal on Saturday said the company's proposed investment of Rs 1 lakh crore in Odisha, including a 3 million tonne per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter and a 6 MTPA alumina refinery, has the potential to transform the state into India's aluminium hub.
Agarwal made the remarks after meeting Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhawan here to review the progress of Vedanta's proposed investments in the state.
The discussions focused on expediting project execution milestones and strengthening industry-government collaboration to accelerate Odisha's next phase of industrial development.
The proposed investment includes a cutting-edge 3 MTPA aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal district and a 6 MTPA alumina refinery in Rayagada district, which Agarwal said would mark a major step in India's industrial growth.
The Dhenkanal smelter will also supply high-quality hot metal to Vedanta's downstream aluminium parks in Odisha, facilitating greater value addition and promoting innovation in domestic manufacturing.
Once completed, the projects will increase Vedanta's cumulative aluminium production capacity to 6 MTPA, enabling the company to cater to India's growing demand for aluminium.
During the meeting, Agarwal also proposed a brownfield expansion of the company's aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda by an additional 1 MTPA.
The Chief Minister assured the Vedanta chairman of all possible support for the proposed investments and said the state government was keen to create large-scale employment opportunities for the youth.
Agarwal said the proposed investments were aimed at creating a world-class industrial ecosystem to support India's ambitions in infrastructure, energy transition, advanced manufacturing and emerging technologies.
"Together with the Government of Odisha, we are committed to building globally competitive assets, creating large-scale employment, strengthening local enterprises and contributing meaningfully to a Viksit Bharat," he said.
He also announced that Vedanta would establish a 1,000-bed hospital in Western Odisha.
Agarwal reaffirmed Vedanta's commitment to Odisha and said the partnership between the company and the state had strengthened over the past two decades.
The proposed projects are expected to generate more than two lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities and create a multiplier effect across logistics, infrastructure, engineering and ancillary industries, generating over 20 lakh livelihood opportunities, he said.
The investment would also contribute to import substitution in strategic natural resources and support the growth of thousands of MSMEs and supplier businesses, he added.
