Women hold solidaritymarch in Patna, demand safety and freedom

Patna, Oct 7 (UNI) Defying heavy rain, a large number of women took out a solidarity march on Wednesday evening raising slogans such as “Raat Hamari, Sadak Hamari” (The night is ours, the streets are ours) to demand justice, equality, freedom and an end to violence against women.
Taking out the march, the protesters near Gandhi Maidan called upon the government and administration to ensure the safety of women, take immediate action in cases of violence against them and ensure speedy disposal of such cases. According to the protesters, police detained several participants even before the march began.
Following the detention of their fellow protesters, Nivedita Jha, Mona, Meena Tiwari, Shashi Yadav, Anu Yadav, Priyanka, Shaili Vinod and Aarti Rai, among others, led the demonstration. Despite the persistent rain, the women remained at the Gandhi Maidan area for nearly two hours and held a public meeting.
Members of various women''s organisations, along with activists associated with civil society and student organisations, also participated in the demonstration. Carrying placards, the protesters raised slogans and used songs and poems to highlight the need for a safe environment for women.
Holding up the lights of their mobile phones, the protesters asserted that women should have the freedom to travel on the streets at night without fear.
CPI leader Nivedita Jha said women''s safety was not merely a law-and-order issue but a question linked to their equal rights and freedom. “Women have the right to step out of their homes, study and return safely. It is the responsibility of the government and administration to create a fear-free environment,” she said.
The protesters demanded that the administration take immediate cognisance of incidents of violence against women and ensure the prompt arrest of accused persons and speedy disposal of cases.
They also called for strengthening institutions such as One Stop Crisis Centres, which provide support and assistance to women facing violence.
The protesters further demanded a safe environment for women at night, swift action in cases of violence and rape, prompt arrest of those responsible, and time-bound disposal of cases related to crimes against women.
