Suvendu warns Mamata over medical records after legal notice to SSKM

Kolkata, Oct 5 (UNI) Hours after former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s lawyer served a legal notice on SSKM Hospital and other health authorities over the disclosure of her 2021 medical records, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari warned that more documents, including X-ray and MRI reports, could be made public if the issue was pursued further.

Speaking to reporters after a state Cabinet meeting at Nabanna on Monday, Adhikari said Banerjee was “making a mistake” by raising the issue and asked the state Health Department to forward her complaint to him.
“The document was not at SSKM Hospital. The document was never supposed to be at SSKM Hospital. If necessary, I will reveal where I got the document from. Mamata Banerjee may not know that she had filed the case herself!” he said.
“She had filed a case alleging that she had been ‘beaten up and her leg broken’ under the leadership of BJP’s Pralay Pal. The case was subsequently handed over to the CID. I will reveal where I got the document from,” he added.

Adhikari further warned he would advise Banerjee’s lawyers not to “dig too deep” into the issue.
He claimed that Banerjee had expected to return as chief minister for a fourth term and had left relevant documents behind.
He did not, however, explicitly say that he had obtained the medical records from her office.
The Chief Minister also warned that he could release the X-ray and MRI reports if required.
His remarks came shortly after Banerjee’s legal notice questioned how her confidential medical records reached the present chief minister and were subsequently made public.
The controversy dates back to March 2021, when Banerjee, then chief minister and a candidate from Nandigram, allegedly sustained injuries during her election campaign.
She was subsequently treated at SSKM Hospital and campaigned in a wheelchair with her leg in a cast.
The Trinamool Congress had used the slogan “Khela Hobe” while referring to her campaign despite the injury.
The issue resurfaced last week after Adhikari publicly produced a medical report that he said showed no evidence of a fracture or dislocation.
He accused Banerjee of making false claims about the injury and announced that the state government would initiate a fresh inquiry.
Banerjee’s legal notice, meanwhile, focuses on the alleged unauthorised disclosure of her medical information rather than the political dispute over the injury itself.
Her lawyer has sought an explanation from SSKM Hospital, Bangur Institute of Neurosciences and the state Health Department on how the records reached Adhikari and whether they were disclosed with proper authorisation.
The notice also raises questions about medical confidentiality and cites the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
It seeks an inquiry into whether the documents were altered or manipulated, whether their release was authorised, and what steps will be taken to prevent further disclosure of Banerjee’s medical records.
