ECoR logs 3.4 pc freight loading growth, 10 pc rise in unloading

Bhubaneswar, Oct 8 (UNI) A 14 pc surge in iron ore loading helped East Coast Railway ramp up freight loading by 3.4 pc to 120.76 million tonnes (MT) during April-September 2026, compared with 116.78 MT in the corresponding period last year.
Iron ore loading rose to 19.60 MT from 17.19 MT during the period, while coal—the railway’s biggest freight commodity—grew 3.7 pc to 71.01 MT from 68.46 MT. Container loading also increased 7.8 pc to 2.10 MT, while iron and steel loading edged up 0.3 pc.
Rayagada Division led the growth among ECoR’s three divisions, recording an 8.8 pc rise in loading to 19.97 MT. Sambalpur posted 7.3 pc growth at 13.15 MT, while Khurda Road, which accounted for the bulk of the freight, loaded 87.64 MT, up 1.7 pc.
ECoR attributed the growth to sustained efforts to streamline freight operations, improve planning and ensure coordination with stakeholders for uninterrupted loading and movement.
The railway also recorded a 10 pc rise in freight unloading, which increased to 109.66 MT during April-September 2026 from 100.11 MT in the year-ago period.
Khurda Road recorded the highest unloading at 78.33 MT, up 11pc, followed by Sambalpur at 22.84 MT, up 6 pc, and Rayagada at 8.49 MT, up 3 pc.UNI MK AAB
