Taslima Nasrin in Kolkata for second visit since change of government

Kolkata, Oct 7 (UNI) Noted writer and secular activist Taslima Nasrin is in Kolkata for the second time since the change of government in West Bengal, with several engagements lined up in the city.
She will stay in Kolkata till October 11.
Upon landing at the airport on Wednesday, she demanded that the government take strict action against communal extremists in Bangladesh.
She also praised Kolkata's Durga Puja. Although she could not be present for the festivities this year, she expressed a desire to attend the celebrations in the city from next year onwards.
"I really like the city of Kolkata. I will be here for several events leading up to the Puja," Taslima said. On Thursday, a programme featuring recitations of her poetry and musical renditions of her verses will be held at Mahajati Sadan. She will also be felicitated at the event, which includes a tribute to the Goddess.
Taslima mentioned that she has multiple engagements scheduled in Kolkata on October 9 and 11 as well. On October 11, a book of hers is set to be launched at a literary event at the BD Auditorium in Salt Lake. She is also expected to attend a magazine launch event at the National Library.
The author expressed a wish to watch the Mahalaya programme at Eden Gardens, if possible. She also conveyed her greetings, love and respect to the residents of Kolkata.
Addressing allegations of communal tension and the vandalism of idols during Durga Puja in Bangladesh, Taslima noted that communal extremists there have been destroying idols for years. She urged the government to take stern action against such groups.
"I want the government to take action against these jihadis and militants," she said. "Kolkata's Puja is incredibly beautiful; no one here would dare to vandalise an idol. Everyone should stand united against this communalism in Bangladesh. The government must take strict measures against these elements."
Taslima also spoke out against the rallies opposing Durga Puja in Bangladesh. She claimed that extremist and militant groups have flourished due to government indulgence. She remarked that taking action against such groups is essential to keep the country healthy and civilised.
Taslima also commented on the political situation in Bangladesh and the possibility of Tarique Rahman coming to India. She stated that Tarique Rahman is currently patronising Jamaat-e-Islami and failing to take adequate action against jihadists. However, she expressed hope that relations between India and Bangladesh would improve in the future. UNI BGA NST CDS
