Several rivers above danger marks in Bihar

Patna, Sept 27 (UNI) Several rivers in Bihar, including the Gandak, Kosi and Bagmati, continued to flow above their respective danger marks at several locations on Sunday amid persistent rainfall and increased water inflow from catchment areas in Nepal.
According to data released by the Bihar Water Resources Department , water levels in the Gandak and Kosi, as well as at several monitoring stations along the Bagmati, remained above the danger marks. The department is also keeping a close watch on the discharge from major barrages.
At Dumariaghat in Gopalganj district, the Gandak river was flowing at 63.00 metres, which was 0.78 metres above its danger mark of 62.22 metres. The water level was continuing to rise.
In Khagaria district, the Kosi river at Baltara was recorded at 34.92 metres, 1.07 metres above the danger mark of 33.85 metres, with the river showing a rising trend.
The situation along the Bagmati also remained sensitive at several locations. At Sonakhan in Sitamarhi district, the river stood at 68.60 metres, 0.30 metres above the danger mark of 68.30 metres. At Katounjha in Muzaffarpur, the water level was 55.70 metres, exceeding the danger mark of 55.00 metres by 0.70 metres.
At Benibad, also in Muzaffarpur district, the Bagmati was flowing at 49.72 metres, which was 1.04 metres above the danger mark of 48.68 metres. Water levels at all these locations were showing a rising trend.
Water levels were also reported to be rising at Dheng in Sitamarhi, Dubbedhar in Sheohar and areas around Kesaria. However, the levels at these locations remained around or below the respective danger marks.
Gandak discharge likely to rise further
Heavy rainfall in the Gandak''s catchment area has led to a sharp increase in the discharge at the Valmikinagar Barrage, which rose to 4.16 lakh cusecs at 10 a.m. on Saturday and was expected to increase further.
According to the latest information from the Water Resources Department, the Gandak catchment area in Nepal received above-normal rainfall during the preceding 24 hours. In view of the high water level recorded at Devghat in Nepal, the discharge at Valmikinagar Barrage was expected to reach around 5 lakh cusecs by the evening.
The design discharge capacity of the Valmikinagar Barrage is 8.50 lakh cusecs. The barrage released 3,84,200 cusecs at 4 a.m., 3,96,000 cusecs at 5 a.m. and 4,00,000 cusecs at 6 a.m.
At the Birpur Kosi Barrage, the discharge stood at 2,41,195 cusecs at 7 a.m., showing a declining trend. Between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., the discharge had remained at around 2.49 lakh cusecs. The Kosi Barrage has a design discharge capacity of 9.50 lakh cusecs.
Meanwhile, the Indrapuri Sone Barrage released 45,006 cusecs at 7 a.m., with the flow also showing a declining trend. The discharge was 46,901 cusecs at 4 a.m., 46,875 cusecs at 5 a.m. and 46,818 cusecs at 6 a.m. The barrage has a design discharge capacity of 14.58 lakh cusecs.
The Water Resources Department said the situation was currently under control. The relatively low water level in the Ganga was allowing the water from the Gandak to drain into the river smoothly, reducing the likelihood of widespread waterlogging or flooding at present.
The department is maintaining hourly records of river levels and discharge from major barrages to closely monitor the evolving situation.
With water levels continuing to rise at sensitive locations such as Dumariaghat on the Gandak, Baltara on the Kosi and several stations along the Bagmati, authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance in view of the potential risk of flooding and waterlogging.
